HORSEMANSHIP DAY CAMP AT
CAMP TONKAWA

APRIL 2013
6 -- Horsemanship Day Camp
This class is for all of you that wish you had a horse! Wear old blue jeans and boots if you have them. You will get the chance to do some basic riding. Bring sunscreen! One day event from 9am-2pm. Ages 7 and up welcome.
13-14 -- Native American Indian Camp
Our camp is named after the Native American Indian Tribe that lived in its immediate area, the "TONKAWAS". This camp will explore, through lots of fun activities, this particular tribe along with other plains Indians. The camp founders have always held a deep respect and honor to the Native Americans, who lived in harmony with our mother earth. How did they live for thousands of years on Turtle Island (North America), keeping it so pristine that when the Europeans came to this continent, they believed it to be uncivilized? Let us take a look at their lifestyle. You will get to sleep in our real Tipis and learn how to set them up.
17 -- Jr. Horsemanship Day Camp

APRIL 24
REENACTMENT OF THE OKLAHOMA LAND RUN
AT HEIGHTS PARK IN RICHARDSON

Time: 1:35pm (the race begins!)
Location: Heights Park in Richardson -- 711 W. Arapaho Rd, near the S.W. corner of Floyd and Arapaho
Details: On the morning of April 22, 1889, thousands upon thousands of Americans from over the entire nation lined up on the borders of what was then known as the Unassigned Lands of the Indian Territory, or the "Oklahoma country." Come join us for a reenactment! Claiming a "stake" is easy. At the sound of a gun, participants run to a plot of land and "stake" their claim ("improve" it). In 1889 homesteaders were expected to prepare a home site or improve the land before they could stake a claim, but in reality, most homesteads were claimed by throwing a stake onto the ground or spreading a blanket on it. Therefore, blankets, wagons, or even little brothers work well for staking claims. After you locate and "improve" your land you must go to the "land office" to officially claim your land. In 1889 it cost $25 but in 2013 it is free! Your children can stake a "farmland" claim (where they won't have to do anything. They can also claim a "city" plot where they can sell wares, set up game booths, or sell services. The '89ers needed to buy and sell goods and services too, especially if they lived in the city. If you have ever wanted your children to experience an "Enterprise City"--this is it. They can purchase supplies, make things, sell them, then calculate their profit.
Cold drinks and chocolate chip cookies are often big sellers. Children can also make things to sell or bring yard sale items. Or they can set up a "service" business such as a carnival game, face painting, or playing an instrument. Let them use their imagination. Later they may wish to spend their profit by buying crafts, playing games, drinking cold drinks, and eating goodies.
To Participate: To participate, you only need to show up!  Come dressed in "89'er" clothes if you want. Come early to be ready. It takes maybe 1/2 an hour to run & officially claim land and the rest of the time is spent talking or buying and selling. You can come late as there is usually land to claim & certainly you can still buy & sell!

No tables or electricity provided. We set up on the grass after we run. Blankets, chairs, tables etc. are fine to bring but know that the parking lot is about 1/2 a block away. Please volunteer to help man the land office right after the run.
For more information: Contact Cathy Allen at 972-442- 3006 (home) or at 972-742-5215 (cell), or by email allenadvertising@verizon.net.
In case of bad weather on April 24th call to verify that it will need to be rescheduled to the following week.  The make-up date will be 2 weeks later on Wednesday May 8rth at 1:35pm, same place.
