This wonderfully imaginative children's hardcover book by bestselling authors Gary Chapman and Rick Osborne, featuring four-color illustrations (with hidden details!) by Wilson Williams, Jr., will help children learn the importance of love. Based on Gary's highly successful The 5 Love Languages®, A Perfect Pet for Peyton tells an entertaining and playful story of five children who each, with the help of Mr. Chapman and the unique pets at his special emporium, discover their own personal love language. Children and parents alike will experience firsthand the power of the love languages as they cuddle up and spend precious time together reading this book over and over again.
The cast of child characters in this whimsical story include:
  • Peyton, one of the birthday celebrants, loves to help others, and appreciates it when others do little things for him.
  • Penny, Peyton's twin sister, who receives love best when others spend quality time with her.
  • Jayla, one of Penny's close friends, is always saying nice things about people. Her love language is words of affirmation.
  • Kevin, one of Peyton's close friends, enjoys giving things to people.
  • Sofia loves to pet the animals, and to show her love for others with special hugs.
My Impressions

I first heard about Five Love Languages a few years ago when I was going through couples counseling. The adult version of this book transformed my life and the relationships that I have with others. Knowing how to affirm the love you have for someone in a way unique to them is liberating for all involved. So when I saw that Moody Publishing had a kids version of this book I knew I wanted to read it with my 7 year old. Once again I was not disappointed. This wonderful  book really helps teach children about the five love language: gifts, words of affirmation, quality time, physical touch and acts of service through a outlet they can relate to-animals.  s they walk along side each child in the story they discover unique traits they each have, how to recognize and how those traits translate into a love language.

This hard backed book is easy for little hands to hold. Pages are thick enough that they do not tear easy and the gloss finish helps prevent the pages from sticking together, which also aides in making this book easy for small children to manipulate. The illustrations are bold, vivid and very detailed. The warm and welcoming pictures help engage the child and bring the story to life. One of my sons favorite aspects of the book was searching for different animals hidden on each page. Some of which were pretty tricky to spot. The sprinkles of added colored text in different sizes made the book fun and added an extra level of excitement for visual learners.

I adored going through the quiz in the back of the book to learn the love language of your child. I already knew what my son's was, but it was nice to go through the book and get confirmation with his own opinion of how he sees himself.  It also led to him testing me so he could learn my love language and we guessed his sisters together for fun.
