Awesome Science: Exploring Mount St. Helen's

About the program:

Noah's adventures show children and teens how earth science actually supports the biblical record. These 30-minute programs show that the biblical record can be trusted and the idea of evolution cannot. This high-quality DVD series is professionally produced by a father and two young sons—truly inspiring. Use in any Christian education setting including churches, schools, and homes. Be sure to show your children's friends, too! Join Noah as he travels to Mt. St. Helens, in beautiful Washington State. He’ll explore why the 1980 eruption which dumped 600 feet of landslide deposit into the valley below is considered “God’s gift to Creationists”.   He discusses how evidence at Mt. St. Helens supports the global flood theory, and talks about evolution versus creation and why creation is the answer.  It’s a thrilling ride filled with facts and adventure!

My Review:

Study Guide: The study guide is very comprehensive. It comes with a complete word list, key concepts, bonus activities, and an introduction into the unit. The book  is broken down 8 sections, with also an introduction and conclusion. Each section has a small introduction to a topic related to Mount St. Helen's, true/false questions, word bank and a story that you fill in using your word bank, along with discussion topics and bonus activities at the end of the section. The end of the book has the conclusion wrapping up all sections that dealt with the overall subject matter of Mount St. Helen's. The front cover illustration is simple, but well done and on topic. The author does a wonderful job of linking biblical references to events, while still giving secular opinions. Our favorite part of the study guide were the discussion questions. They are designed to get you digging deeper on your own and searching for other reference's to guide you in your answers and discussion. Each topic can be done as a daily assignment or spread out into a week.We chose to use a schedule. Mondays we reviewed the video and word bank words making sure my kids knew the definitions (Spelling City) and how to use each word properly in a sentence. On Tuesday we did the "fill in the blanks" and looked up[ information about each sentence such as geographical locations on our maps/globes, current pictures using Google Earth, etc. Wednesday's we did the True/False and reviewed the previous 2 days. Thursday was left for discussion questions and Friday's for any bonus questions and a small quiz over the whole week.

DVD:

The DVD that is presented in a faced pace, intriguing and high quality way  that draws you in and holds your attention. It maintains a Biblical Worldview throughout, but does make sure that it mentions secular ideas as well without loosing biblical authority as its basis. Noah is captivating and although he overacts at times, it does not take away from the facts or the story being shared. I love that time and again the DVD points you back to scripture.  The DVD does an amazing job captivating your attention with beautiful up-close shots of locations.
