Tower of Babel: The Cultural History of Our Ancestors by Bodie Hodge

About the Book:
The Tower of Babel: The Cultural History of Our Ancestors reveals our shared ancestry as never before! Many are familiar with the Biblical account of Babel, but after the dispersal, there was a void beyond Biblical history until empires like Rome and Greece arose. Now, discover the truth of these people groups and their civilizations that spread across the earth and trace their roots back to Babel as well as to the sons and grandsons of Noah.

Many of today’s scholars write off what occurred at the Tower of Babel as mythology and deny that it was a historical event. Beginning with the Biblical accounts, author Bodie Hodge researched ancient texts, critical clues, and rare historic records to help solve the mystery of what became of the failed builders of Babel. For the purpose of defending the Bible, Hodge presents these and other vital historical facts surrounding this much-debated event. Teens and older can use this layman’s reference for Biblical classes, ancient history, apologetics training, and to realize their own cultural connection to the Bible.

My Review:

I love a good book that tackles the tough issues surrounding the Bible and The Tower of Babel is simple that, a great book that answers questions that have been argued over for as long as I can remember. The events surrounding the Tower of Babel can be a confusing topic to take on without some strong biblical knowledge to hold onto as your defense. It still dumbfounds me that people still deny the power and sovereignty of God even after events like the flood and the tower.

The first thing that really caught my attention when reading this book was the section about breaking down the specific attacks on the Tower of Babel, mainly the origins of  racism and skin color. I had never given much thought to how melanin is simply a brownish pigment and it’s our genes that determine how light or dark our skin is. To be able to trace something this profound all the way back to the Tower of Babel was insightful and huge for me. It really made me sit and ponder for a few days about how racism has grown and the hatred children have been taught when we really are all of one race, not separate races. Of course there is more to it, but I’ll make you read the first chapter for yourself! I also greatly enjoyed chapter 15 regarding Peleg and the Continental Drift. I love seeing science and God agreeing, even if they do not agree that the Continental Drift occurred during the Flood.

Bodie did a marvelous job of countering attacks against the Tower of Babel and not on his authority, but by pointing out biblical truths that defend the Tower and Gods ultimate authority over us all. One of the things I liked the most in this book, was how Bodie not only included biblical references to his stance, but also included objections to what he states and follow up to them as well. He does not leave you hanging in the balance with more questions then what you had before you started reading his book.

The book is arranged in easy to read segments that are enjoyable and easy to comprehend for both scholars and laymen alike. Bodie makes good use of maps and time tables to help you follow along and not get lost and the book is outlined in an easy to follow layout.

If you’re curious about your origins and history I highly recommend picking up The Tower of Babel and discovering for yourself how wonderfully and marvelous our creator has made us. Every time I dig  I am further blown away by how limited my sight is and how vast God’s is.
