“But what would I say even if I did find him? I’m the
daughter you abandoned fifteen years ago?” I shake my head in disgust. I’m

“Why do you ask?” I continue, more gently now.
“I just thought about

“My dad will never see my show,” he says, choking up.

Charlie mumbles a response, but I’m not listening. I’m
thinking about how much I wish I could go with him to New York next fall, and
how as much as I’d have trouble leaving Mom, I can’t tell him the real reason I
can’t go: the government is depending on me. If I’m not around to find deadly
radioactive weapons, no one will be.
